TS File #..7

Environmental Control System:

Client: Male, late twenties. High level quadriplegic. Operates an electric wheelchair with his chin.

Devices to be operated: Two Televisions (Lounge & Bedroom), Telephone, Bedroom Lamp, Lounge Lamp, Stereo (on/off), Fan, Bedroom Reverse Cycle Air Conditioner, Electric Sliding Door, Intercom Between unit and main house.

Switch Systems: Two operating locations had to be accommodated; mobile use from the wheelchair, and in bed. We looked at all the devices to be controlled and listed which devices had to be operated from which location. For example, the bedroom television would only be used from in bed, and the lounge room television would never be used from in bed.

System Description The system was based on an Envicom 10, a hard wired visual scanning control system capable of switching mains and low voltage devices. While in the wheelchair, a radio linked suck/blow switch was used. The blow operation operated the Envicom, and the suck directly operated the lounge room television.

A separate radio transmitter was used to directly operate the electric door. The radio links had sufficient range to be used outside, which meant household security was also taken care of.

Separate scanning television controllers were used for each set, and connected using the Envicom as a sort of switch director - the envicom directs the blow switch activations to the appropriate TV Controller.

The reverse cycle air conditioner needed a fifteen Amp supply, so an adaptor was made that switched the unit on and off, but did not actually draw power from the Envicom. The lamps were simply plugged into the Envicom with extension leads. The intercom was already built into the Envicom, and was a simple matter to install by running a cable to the main house.
